The castle of Chenonceau is one of the most famous castle in the Loire Valley.
Maybe because it is called “the Ladies’ castle” – this castle was loved and remodeled by women like Diane de Poitiers or Catherine de Médicis.
It’s an amazing castle first built on the bed of the Cher river, not the Loire. It has three distinct parts.: First, a well conserved medieval tower. Second, a symmetric Renaissance style castle built on the foundation of an old water mill . Third, a 60 meter gallery across the river.
The castle has some some magnificent features like this bedroom covered by marvelous XVI century tapestries from Flandres or others rooms with antique furniture. The old kitchens are located on the first two piers (to be delivered by the river). All the furniture and utensils people used are displayed there.
It’s easy to spend two hours contemplating this spendor and when you think it’s finished, it’s not! Have a walk on the two French gardens and stop at the stable. Don’t forget to also visit the wax museum with its sumptuous collection of costumes made according to genuine documents.
Really, if you love French furniture, history and tapestries, and plan to travel to France, we highly recommend this place.
